The river had been one of her favorite places to go with Dapplepaw, and, even though her sister was no longer alive to go with her, the tan she-cat still liked to come. Tawnywhisper let out a loud sigh as the sounds of her feet started to get drowned out by the gurgling noises of the river. She came to the edge of the water- now about a tail-length wider than the river usually was- and set to searching out a dry place to sit. A little ways down, she found a patch of leaves that had yet to be touched by the cold water, and sat down in the middle of them. The sky overhead was as clear as could be, and a slight breeze brought with it the scent of early newleaf. Although it was still chilly out, Tawnywhisper loved the weather. "I wish you were here to see this, Dapplepaw." she whispered to the sky. As if in response to her words, the wind picked up, blowing a couple of leaves over her paws. Tawnywhisper looked down at the brownish-yellow leaves and laughed. Nothing was particularly funny, but she laughed nonetheless. The blue-eyed she-cat was in a happy mood today.[/style]

What with not being able to find his own, and then having such a confusing (for him, at least) conversation with her sister, he was feeling a bit .. strange. The serious tom had dropped off the moss at camp, earning himself more than a couple strange looks from his fellow warriors, and promptly left again. Really, he could do with some peace and quiet. Or .. well, finding his apprentice wouldn't be that bad either, but he had a feeling he wouldn't see her for a while.
Dustclaw's tabby tail twitched slightly. It really shouldn't be this hard to find an apprentice! But Starclan knows that when you're looking for something (or someone) they'll appear right when you've forgotten about them. And so, Dustclaw stopped trying to track his apprentice's scent, and instead allowed his mind to wander and his paws to take him where Starclan willed.
As his paws continued to move forward, Dustclaw began to think of his sister. Whitetail had chosen her own path in life, and he did not see her often. He wished the pretty she-cat the best, and loved her, even though he could not help but feel guilt when he looked at her, since -- ... well, he had just gone over that in his mind during his conversation with Mintpaw. Going over it again would do him no good.
The sound of the river brought Dustclaw's mind back to the present. The uncomfortable feeling of his always extended claws sinking into the wet earth made Dustclaw's green eyes narrow slightly, but he walked forward nonetheless. A laugh reached his ears, sounding like it came from a she-cat. With curiosity, the warrior emerged from the undergrowth to see Tawnywhisper sitting on some leaves. A faint smile appeared as Dustclaw padded forward, stopping a couple tail lengths away from the other warrior.
He was sure she should have noticed him, since he wasn't trying to sneak up on her. The tabby tom dipped his head in greetings before mewing amicably, "something funny, Tawnywhisper?" His tone was a bit less serious than normal from the peaceful scene of the river. It was a little unusual, but the change in tone was not very big.

Her laughter died down as she tried to determine who it was. The tan she-cat turned her head when the other cat appeared, and instantly recognized him as Dustclaw. She smiled as the tom dipped his head in greeting, and returned the greeting. Tawnywhisper inched over a couple of mouse-tails, making room on the dry patch should Dustclaw wish to sit down. "Something funny, Tawnywhisper?"Tawnywhisper paused for a second. How could she explain her laughter? Somehow, saying 'Oh, you know. I said something to my dead sister, and in return, I think she made wind blow leaves at my paws' didn't seem like a good idea. She looked at Dustclaw. "Just reliving past memories." She answered. It was a good answer, and she wasn't technically lying. "So what brings you out here, Dustclaw?" She asked. Tawnywhisper hoped he'd have some good, long story to tell, because she wasn't sure how long she could talk. She hadn't said much to anyone since Dapplepaw had died, and holding long conversations had never been her strong suit. The only cat she had ever talked to for long periods of time had been her sister. Tawnywhisper realized that she had been staring at the tom, and with an embarrassed cough, looked down at her paws. The brown leaves still lay on them, and she busied herself looking at the pattern of colors on each one while she waited for a reply. [/style]

"Just reliving past memories. So what brings you out here, Dustclaw?"
Dustclaw waved his tail in understanding. He did that sometimes as well, remembering when his father was alive and before he had become arrogant. The warrior noticed Tawnywhisper cough and glance away, but he didn't catch why she had done that. The tom was just a little thick sometimes. Just a little.
The tabby closed his eyes with a sense of calm before mewing, "just looking for some peace and quiet. I can't find my apprentice, and her sister ended up keeping me company." He paused, opening his emerald eyes, realizing how weird that sounded. Really, a full grown warrior unable to find his apprentice and spending time with her sister. Oh, how his father would have laughed at him for that. And if his sister knew, she would probably join in as well.
In return, Dustclaw couldn't help but let out a short, small chuckle. A couple heartbeats later, he turned his gaze to Tawnywhisper to explain, "that must have sounded strange, though my day didn't really go the way I thought." Dustclaw exhaled inaudibly, looking out over the river. He marveled at the light dancing over the surface of the water before stating plainly, "I wanted to train with Cloverpaw today, but I don't know if it's going to happen."
The warrior's shoulders rose and fell slightly in a shrug. It had been this long already, if it didn't happen, it didn't happen. He had spoken a little more than he had intended to, but Dustclaw was feeling a little more relaxed than usual. Dustclaw settled into a calm silence, and then aded, "how's your training going with Brackenpaw?"

Maybe she'd be spared from having to talk too much. "I can't find my apprentice, and her sister ended up keeping me company."She gave a slight nod of her head. She knew how that felt; not being able to find your apprentice. She'd gotten up in the morning to find Brackenpaw, but he'd already left camp. She hadn't seen him since. The young cat was probably off goofing around somewhere, but she couldn't blame him. It was a nice day out. "That must have sounded strange, though my day didn't really go the way I thought."Tawnywhisper nodded again. "I find that tends to happen with life. Somethimes things just don't turn out the way you want them to." She said quietly, trying to hide the hint of sadness as she thought of her mentor, Graypelt. For a while after he chose another she-cat, nothing seemed to go right. She had a hard time being quiet and catching prey was rare. He'd asked her what was wrong, but she couldn't tell him. It was worse when he died, but eventually she got over it. 'But not completely.' she thought with a sigh. "How's your training going with Brackenpaw?"The question brought her out of her thoughts, and she looked up at Dustclaw. 'So much for not having to talk much.' she thought. "Um, he's doing pretty good. He's very determined. Wants to become leader one day." she said. She looked out at the water for a second. "I think if he tries hard enough, he could have a chance." She believed the little tom did have a chance at becoming leader. He was determined, but in a good way, and it would take him paces. "What about you and Cloverpaw?" She asked. [/style]

Somethimes things just don't turn out the way you want them to."
Tawnywhisper's response was quiet, though Dustclaw didn't really expect a loud answer anyways. He assumed that she was talking about her sister. He knew the bare basics about the she-cat, because they were only a moon apart and were apprentices together, though Dustclaw hadn't been .. very sociable.
One thing that the warrior had begun to regret lately was the fact that he had never made any attempts to be friendly to the other apprentices. It was like he had only just come into the clan. Well, even now he wasn't that friendly to most cats (outwardly, at least), but that didn't stop him from having the occasional reflective moment. There was always Whitetail, and he knew that he could speak to her when he needed and she would listen, but she was living her own life, and he wouldn't interrupt that.
"Um, he's doing pretty good. He's very determined. Wants to become leader one day. I think if he tries hard enough, he could have a chance. What about you and Cloverpaw?"
Dustclaw laughed softly for a mere moment before letting it fade away. How ironic, Cloverpaw had the same ambition! He voiced the source of his laughter soon after, "Cloverpaw wants to become leader as well." He paused for a moment, and then continued. "But she shows promise. I think she could also have a chance - but she's a little too cheeky. Brackenpaw doesn't have that problem," Dustclaw stopped for a moment before amending himself, "from what I've seen, at least."
The tom allowed a silence to overtake him for a bit, opting to simply gaze at the river and enjoy Tawnywhisper's company. After a couple heartbeats, he spoke up again, "perhaps we could train together some time, with our apprentices."

She mentally went over her words, finding nothing funny in what she'd just said. She was about to ask him why he laughed when he voiced the reason. "Cloverpaw wants to become leader as well. But she shows promise. I think she could also have a chance - but she's a little too cheeky. Brackenpaw doesn't have that problem... from what I've seen, at least."Tawnywhisper smiled. She could see how Cloverpaw could be cheeky, though she'd never witnessed the apprentice act so. "Brackenpaw has his moments, but he's pretty level-headed." She said. The tan she-cat sighed ever so lightly at the silence that stretched between them. It was nice having someone to talk to that didn't expect one of them to be saying something at all times. Having periods of silence in conversations was always good for her; it gave her a chance to gather her thoughts and think about things. ""Perhaps we could train together some time, with our apprentices."Tawnywhisper looked at Dustclaw. A hint of sadness flashed through her eyes, but was gone within seconds. She hadn't trained with anyone other than her apprentice since her sister died. 'But,' She thought with determination, 'it's time to start moving on.'For some reason, the thought of moving on scared her. She looked down, afraid Dustclaw would pick up on the montage of emotions flowing through her eyes. That was one thing she hated about herself; her inability to keep her emotions hidden. Both her sister and her mentor had told her that anyone could read how she was feeling at a particular moment by just looking at her eyes. Ever since then, the she-cat had taken to looking down at the ground when she was feeling emotions she didn't want others to know about. After a short pause, Tawnywhisper replied. "Yeah, training them together is a good idea. Brackenpaw hasn't had the chance to train with anyone but me so far." she said. "Maybe we could look for them later today and let them know that we'll be needing them tomorrow so they don't run off on us." she said, once again looking up. This time, however, she had a smile on her face. [/style]
